Follow a one mile circular route to explore this lovely little nature reserve. Located just off Kinmel Bay Beach, Kinmel Dunes are a designated Local Nature Reserve. Once part of a much longer strip of dunes running between Towyn and Rhyl, this is all that remains now and it is an important habitat for a wide range of plants and animals.

What can I do on Kinmel Dunes?

The circular walk is suitable for walkers, prams, wheelchair users and cyclists - it’s a great way to experience the dunes and spot some of its elusive inhabitants without disturbing their natural habitat.

If you love flowers, keep an eye out for Meadow Buttercup, Wild Carrot, Common Cat’s Ear and Lucerne. Among the flowers you might see butterflies like the Meadow Brown, Orange Tip and Green-veined white, while out to sea keep your eyes peeled for grey seals and common porpoise (often mistaken for dolphins). Listen carefully for the wistful song of the skylark and look up to spy the arrow-like outline of the dune’s resident kestrel.

While the dunes really come alive during the summer months, they are worth a visit any time of the year, it’s a beautiful, ever-changing landscape and there’s always something new to discover.

There is ample seating to stop and enjoy your surroundings and, during the summer, there is a kiosk serving snacks, and toilet facilities.

How do I get here?

Public transport stops close by in Kinmel Bay and the dunes can be accessed on foot along the Wales Coast Path, while cyclists can take a short detour off National Cycle Route 5 to explore. Can I walk my dog on Kinmel Dunes?

Conwy County is proud to be a dog-friendly destination but there are restrictions on where and when you can walk your dog on the beach. Some beaches welcome dogs all year round but many do not allow them (except for registered guide dogs and assistance dogs) between the 1^st May - 30^th September and some prohibit dogs all year round. Whatever the restrictions, we encourage you to ensure your dog is always under control, both on and off the lead. We also ask that you pick up after your dog as it is an offence not to. Lastly, dispose of dog waste in a convenient litter bin.
