What can I do on Penmaenmawr Beach?

Situated where the mountains meet the sea, Penmaenmawr boasts a long beach and promenade with excellent access from the A55. The foreshore is shingle and rock, but low tide reveals an expansive sandy shore. As beaches go, this one is special.

The promenade is perfect for leisurely strolls and there are lots of landscaped areas to sit and take in the views along the way.  The beach is also perfectly positioned for memorable sunsets and you can watch the sun dip behind Puffin Island in the summer months.

If you’ve got the family in tow and sunset chasing’s not an option, Penmaenmawr is also a great choice for a day at the seaside. With a paddling pool, play areas and a skate park, kids are well-catered for here. And that’s before they even set foot on the beach!

Thanks to a level beach and strong Irish Sea currents, the beach is popular with watersports and sailing enthusiasts. Located at the sailing club, the jetty makes the beach accessible for all and a seasonal café provides lights bites and the opportunity to rest and refuel.

This coastal village grew up in the shadow of the imposing Penmaenmawr Mountain and its granite quarry – a tangible link to its industrial past. For those of you who enjoy exploring on foot or on two wheels, the Wales Coast Path and National Cycle Route run along the front, winding their way around the Pen Y Clip headland. Unlike cars, which traverse the headland by way of a tunnel, you’ll be treated to dramatic views of the rockface and quarry as you travel.  

How do I get here?

Penmaenmawr Beach is accessible by car from the A55; there is a large car park (payable) adjacent to the promenade. Penmaenmawr train station is close to the beach and a request stop on all North Wales Coast services. and it is also possible to walk to the beach along the Wales Coast Path. For cyclists, National Cycle Route 5 passes along the promenade. 

Penmaenmawr Beach is an e-bike charging and maintenance stop - cyclists travelling along the coast of Conwy can make use of dedicated e-bike facilities at a number of convenient points along the National Cycle Route 5. Provided by Conwy County Borough Council, the facilities are designed to support people using electric bikes for leisure, commuting and longer journeys along the coast.

Can I walk my dog on Penmaenmawr Beach?

Conwy County is proud to be a dog-friendly destination but there are restrictions on where and when you can walk your dog on the beach. Some beaches welcome dogs all year round but many do not allow them (except for registered guide dogs and assistance dogs) between the 1^st May - 30^th September and some prohibit dogs all year round. Whatever the restrictions, we encourage you to ensure your dog is always under control, both on and off the lead. We also ask that you pick up after your dog as it is an offence not to. Lastly, dispose of dog waste in a convenient litter bin.
