The last few years have seen some incredible developments made to the beachfront in Colwyn Bay. A recently completed multi-million-pound Waterfront Project has given the seafront a new lease of life, attracting visitors to the almost three-mile-long beach and promenade which runs from Old Colwyn to Rhos-On-Sea.

As part of the waterfront project, state of the art technology was utilised to dredge a sandbar 20 miles out to sea and pump sand onto the beach. The result is what you see today – a beautifully golden, clean and safe stretch of sand as far as the eye can see. As a contender for a perfect sandcastle-building beach, this one is hard to beat!

What can I do on Porth Eirias Beach?

There are plenty of places to stop and enjoy the views, including multiple seating and landscaped areas along the promenade. On the beach itself, the gently shelving sand is ideal for setting up for a traditional day at the seaside.

At the heart of the beach is Porth Eirias, home to celebrity chef, Bryn Williams’, award-winning seafood bistro and cafe. The building also houses public toilets and showers, and there is a pay and display car park. The adjacent children’s play area offers an alternative to beach-led activities and the views from the top of the building are breathtaking. Along the promenade in both directions there is plentiful parking (pay and display) and kiosks selling beach toys, snacks and ice creams.

How do I get here?

Porth Eirias Beach is easily accessed by car or public transport from the A55. From Colwyn Bay town centre or railway station, the beach is just a few minutes’ walk. If you are travelling by car, there is pay and display parking along the whole length of the beach. Visiting by bike? National Cycle Route 5 passes along the seafront on a dedicated cycle path.

Porth Eirias is an e-bike charging and maintenance stop - cyclists travelling along the coast of Conwy can make use of dedicated e-bike facilitied at a number of convenient points along National Cycle Route 5. Provided by Conwy County Borough Council, the facilities are designed to support people using electric bikes for leisure, commuting and longer journeys along the coast.

Can I walk my dog on Porth Eirias Beach?

Conwy County is proud to be a dog-friendly destination but there are restrictions on where and when you can walk your dog on the beach. Some beaches welcome dogs all year round but many do not allow them (except for registered guide dogs and assistance dogs) between the 1^st May - 30^th September and some prohibit dogs all year round. Whatever the restrictions, we encourage you to ensure your dog is always under control, both on and off the lead. We also ask that you pick up after your dog as it is an offence not to. Lastly, dispose of dog waste in a convenient litter bin.
